The Election
Once in a country not very far away,
An election was coming in a couple of days,
Three candidates with three agendas had set out to run,
The people would choose when the campaigning was done.

Billionaire Donald lived in a tower of gold,
His ego defied logic and his words were so bold,
He intimidated his opponents spewing fear to win,
and promised to make America great again.

Hillary lied at her rallies and acted true blue,
Pantsuit would preach equality as systemic racism grew,
Minorities flocked to her for overdue civil rights,
While her Foundation sold out to other countries every night.

Sweet Bernie cared for the tall and the small,
He worked for the 99% percent of us all,
He said health care in his view was a personal right,
And a fire in each of us he would ignite.

Donald’s debates were mocking and rude,
His secret missteps against women were blatant and crude,
He’d take care of ISIS though, there was nothing to fear,
And for border security a great wall would appear.

Hillary sent e-mail on a server with nothing concealed,
When she was Secretary of State it was revealed,
The FBI checked if classified material was sent,
Hillary didn’t worry, Comey was bought, money well spent.

Bernie raised money 27 dollars at a time,
He thought taking Wall Street money was a crime,
Bernie could not be bought by the 1% you see,
He worked on the issues for you and me.

Donald focused on security and minorities taking jobs,
People were scared of terrorist mobs,
So they missed his real reason for dividing the nation,
A racist agenda promoting a ban on immigration.

Hillary’s corruption grew day by day,
Allegations were brought out of “pay for play”,
Yet, she stayed with a centrist, establishment tale,
with Obama’s  policies that still weren’t stale.

Bernie’s rallies grew larger and prouder,
Education for all they chanted even louder,
They knew he would make Climate Change slowly decrease
And there would be no more wars, only peace.

Donald promised our nation would be considered first.
Jobs would not leave, or those companies would be cursed,
Climate Change was just weather and  regulations should be lifted,
You see Donald knew everything, man he was gifted.

Hillary pandered to each group she greeted,
Even as Indian’s sacred lands were depleted,
Her audience focused on the first woman in power,
The sheep in the pasture hoped for that shattering hour.

Bernie’s HUGE compassion was very real,
When a little bird endorsed him it increased his appeal,
Bernie became our soul’s honest guiding sage,
He said, “When you see injustice, never forget your outrage.”

The Primary was upon us, the votes were cast,
Hillary and Trump were nominees at last,
While shredded ballots in boxes in California sat,
Full of Bernie’s votes stolen by the Democrats.

Tears rolled down each Berniecrat’s eyes,
At the convention as Bernie tried to compromise,
He couldn’t ever let Trump win at all costs,
Yet Bernie’s supporters knew what they’d lost.

The general election was finally all set,
Hillary and Trump debated with out regret,
Trump shouted “lock her up” in puritanical rage,
While she exploited his insults out there on the stage.

The day finally came when we were to decide,
How do you pick between these two?,” we cried,
Third party candidates couldn’t get with the pace,
And so corruption and racism were the choice in this race.

As the votes came in horror crossed Blitzer’s face,
Trump was winning in place after place,
Progressives and Democrats shook with fear that night,
But no one was prouder than the cackling Alt Right.

The first hundred days became our worst nightmare,
Muslim bans in the name of security were not anyway fair,
Mexican roundups  of not just criminals brought fear,
And Russian friendliness seemed very unclear.

Freedom of speech was the enemy of the administration,
Scientific facts on websites were rewritten with determination,
Bannon announced a great big plan,
To deconstruct Democracy with haste if they can.

Trump told the people for all their sakes,
That the media only reported news that was fake,
“Don’t believe anything they say about me,” he smiled.
As more and more Russian meeting dates were being compiled.

Each cabinet member gutted each agency they headed,
De Vos defunded public schools as we all had dreaded,
Pruitt denied Climate Change and regulations were lifted,
Carson took away grants for housing the poor and they drifted.

The public shook with sad realization,
Under this Totalitarian there was only one destination,
For all of us to resist or to be under his thumb,
With him making rules forcing us to succumb.

Bernie set out to stop him and educate the nation
Talking to people and being on each TV station
His followers remembered his words “not me, us.”
And marched in the streets for liberty and justice.

Now good people when we have our next big election,
We need to think of this lesson with deep introspection,
That we really need someone with honesty and heart,
That will nurture our needs, not tear us apart.
